The arrival of the newborn is such a turning point in your first born’s life and all of a sudden the attention is off them. This can be very overwhelming for them as they have had you all to themselves and all of a sudden they are being pushed to the side (no matter how hard you try not to do it).
One of the best pieces of advice I was given was to get a gift from the new baby to give to the big sibling.
Once baby arrives everyone wants to come and visit to meet the new addition to the family. Gifts, attention, time is all thrown towards the newborn and the older sibling or siblings can feel left out.
A gift from the baby makes the first born feel special and it is a great way to build a connection between your two children.
I also got told to introduce the big sibling to the baby instead of introducing the baby to big sibling. So for example: “Miss C this is your big sister Miss A. She is going to help look after you. When you are bigger she will be able to play with you.” This makes the older sibling feel important and expresses how important their new role as big sibling will be.
At first I wasn’t sure what we would organise as a gift from baby to Miss A. I came across a wonderful doll maker and was able to organise a doll to be made for her. I knew the doll we were getting would be something Miss A would love and it also gave her and the new baby a connection.
Jack and Ella make some beautiful dolls and outfits for the dolls. Miss A is in love with Emma Wiggle! When I discovered that ‘Jack and Ella‘ made a version of an Emma doll I knew this was exactly what I wanted to get Miss A from the baby.
Did you get your first born a gift from the new baby? If so what was it?
